This is a very well written, concise, guide to writing a personal statement for undergraduates who are applying to medical school, veterinary medical school, and other health profession colleges. My daughter used it to gain acceptance to veterinary school at Texas AM and I recommend it to premed students that I believe will make excellent doctors who work as scribes for me in a busy Emergency Department. As the author states, GPA and MCAT scores are the most important variables responsible for acceptance to medical school; personal statements will not matter if your GPA and MCATs are low but most scores are separated by very little, often making their letters of recommendation and personal statements the deciding factor. I do a fair amount of reading for my practice and some professional writing, and I believe this short book provides well articulated, excellent advise in writing a killer personal statement.
This is probably a good beginning for writing your own personal statement. I don't think that it should be your only book or resource. A lot of the books out there are great if you have won the Olympics, cured cancer, or if you have already established your own blood bank or something. For the more traditional students (like me) who have not saved the world, this book offers an honest start in beginning to evaluate what you may write about. I supplemented this book with the writing center at my school and I got about 12 interviews (can't remember exact number) after sending my secondaries so I think this book combined with the writing center helped.
The book is very helpful but get it in advanced because it's more effective when you have a good amount of time to work on it.The seller/ author was very quick and she even put a sweet thank you/ good luck note in with the order.I highly recommend buying this book if you're writing your personal statement. It's the best one I've come across and I've done my research.
Just ordered the book, and received it after a few days. Haven't read it yet, but I can see it's going to be very informative and helpful. It's pretty cool how is comes directly from the author too.
