In the 1930s, Architecture magazine ran a series of monthly portfolios on architectural elements. One of these was on mailboxes and that seems to be the only time anybody cataloged Art Deco mailboxes. Cutler invented the mail chute and pretty much owned the business (although there were other box makers.) Cutler's reach extended at least as far as Mexico and Havana, where the Bacardi building still has its regular and air mail boxes.A new survey of these beautiful works was long overdue, and impressive as these are, after waiting 83 years, it's unfortunate that this book is devoted almost entirely to Manhattan, especially without saying so. There are lots of gorgeous, pre-Art Deco mailboxes, and in a book called Art Deco Mailboxes, this space could have been devoted to boxes that actually are Art Deco styled, which can be found in places like Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Portland, Denver, Houston, Dallas, Minneapolis and so on. These are big towns and should not have been overlooked.The photos are pretty good, some not as sharp as one might wish. This could be the reproduction, or some may have been grab and go, given the less than hospitable nature of some NYC property managers. Most people won't notice. The information on Cutler is interesting, along with excerpts from their scarce catalogs and the exact locations of the mailboxes (which Architecture magazine did not reveal.)So, you get more than just Art Deco but a lot less than a real survey in geographic terms. Certainly, anyone who lives in New York will want a copy and the book's compact size makes it convenient for carrying around.
Karen Greene has taught me that artistic splendor can be found anywhere, if we just open our eyes and look! I will never walk into the lobby of a building again without looking for the mailbox. Who knows what architectural wonder I might find?And many thanks to Karen for gathering photographs of all these beautiful boxes together. You've introduced us all to the legacy of the Art Deco mailbox!
ART DECO MAILBOXES: An Illustrated Design History is beautifully illustrated and well written by Karen Greene and is a "must read" for all lovers of the Art Deco period that dates back to the 1920s and 1930s, as I am. Dr. Greene is both a professional Psychologist and Photographer whose talents are well exhibited in this historical and well-documented and thoroughly-researched book by its well-informed author. It was a pleasure to hear Dr. Karen Greene present her book in a well-attended slide show and discussion at the Waldorf Astoria in NY on Feb. 25, 2015. Kudos to Karen Greene!!! Ellen Golding, NYC
