About the Author
Simon G. Brown has been practicing a macrobiotic lifestyle for nearly 25 years. In the mid-1980s, Brown studied under Mishio Kushi in Philadelphia and assisted him with consultations. He also regularly helped cook macrobiotic meals for the 90 or so people who would go to the center to eat. In 1986, Brown returned to London to run the Community Health Foundation—Europe's largest natural health center at the time. Brown later started his own counseling practice and began teaching macrobiotic courses. Brown is also a highly regarded practitioner of feng shui and shiatsu, and a best-selling author on these subjects.Michio Kushi is recognized as the world authority on macrobiotics. He became a proponent of macrobiotics after meeting its founder, George Ohsawa, in Japan in 1945. In the early 1960s Kushi and his wife Aveline founded Erewhon, the first natural food company in the US. In 1971 Kushi and his students founded the East West Journal and later the East West Foundation, for macrobiotic teaching and research. In 1978, Michio and Aveline founded the Kushi Institute, an educational organization with centers throughout America and Europe. Kushi's seminars and lectures have attracted thousands of health care professionals and other supporters. His life and teachings have been written about in Life, Paris-Match, Interview, and other publications. He has written several dozen books on the relationship of diet to health and well-being, including The Macrobiotic Way (Avery, 2004), The Macrobiotic Path to Total Health (Ballantine, 2003), and The Cancer Prevention Diet (St. Martin's Griffin, 2004).

One of the better books on Macrobiotics and probably the most practical. I was cured of Endometriosis with a Macrobiotic Healing Diet which was stricter and didnt allow any flesh at all, just beans, rice, yellow vegetable, green vegetable, Bancha tea. It worked but was pretty hard to follow with a family or for a long time. I was on it a year but had results after 3 months. This book sounds practical and close to what Macrobiotics teaches. I read two other Cookbooks on Amazon that were supposed to be Macrobiotic but were in very high in fat, coconut oil no less, high in flour, used a lot of eggs, cheese and allowed what I would consider a high saturated fat junk food diet. They were not Macrobiotic which in essence is eat whole foods as they come out of the ground.
This was my first macrobiotic cook book and it has been my 'go to' book every since. It got me started with informative explanations and great ideas for updating my pantry. I 'jazz' up the recipes with other ingrediants from the book to suit my taste and it's simply great. I've had it a couple of years now and have lost 26lbs, found that exercising is easier when you have a happy body, no more high blood pressure, cholesterol is perfect, I sleep well, my brain works better, and on and on. So very cool.
This book is good for beginners. Those looking for recipes then this isn't the book. A majority of the book is devoted to concepts of the macrobiotic diet with a small section for recipes.It would be good if Amazon had a "Look Inside" section for their mobile app.
I purchased this book after my doctor recommended I look into a macrobiotic diet to help balance my hormones. I spent time at a macrobiotic restaurant that has a small collection of books that they sell first, browsing through the various options. This one really jumped out at me, for a couple of reasons:1) I did not grow up cooking American or European food. I learned how to cook based on Indian cuisine, and that is the type of food my family and I eat at home most of the time. This book teaches you the principles of macrobiotic cooking in such a way that you can adopt it to whatever cuisine is most familiar and comfortable for you. It's made it easier for me to adapt to this way of eating, since the flavor of my food is satisfying, but the content of it is better for me.2) I liked out way information about macrobiotics was presented. The layout of the information is very clean and easy to understand. Symbols for the different qualities of food make it easy to remember the principles, and it's much easier to absorb the material when you don't have to read textbook-like pages.3) The pictures of the food are appealing. At the end of the day, it's a cookbook and I want to feel like the food I make is going to be appetizing and presentable.4) Simon Brown's writing style is educational, warm and inviting. I think anyone who reads this book as an introduction to macrobiotics will get a good start, and will certainly learn enough to be dangerous.I'm really happy I got it, and I'm even happier that I am using the principles and recipes in the book. My husband is eating this way with me, and he's not going hungry, and neither am I. In fact, I started feeling better after 3 days, which is so encouraging. I think this is a must read for anyone who wants to learn the principles of macrobiotics and wants a simple way to enhance their diet, especially if you don't want to feel pressured or overwhelmed or intimidated.Enjoy!P.S. I love macrobiotics. It's hard to follow in the everyday world, however, this book helps us find some much needed options to a world gone crazy with junk food and fast meals! I love this book. It's pretty basic and helps folks to understand the reasons behind the lifestyle changes. The author, Simon G. Brown, has created an easy to follow guide to cleansing your body so that health can occur. So much illness and dissatisfaction exists today, you may wish to try this if you have high cholesterol, cancer, high blood pressure and other ills that taking pills just doesn't seem to be the answer for! Modern-Day Macrobiotics is a simple and easy to understand book about the principles and lifestyle choices in a world gone mad!As always, Amazon.com has provided me with a book in the condition it was promised and I received it in record time! I've been through the wars with macrobiotics...from the endless brown rice only diet to the "raw" macrobiotics approach...for, off and on, forty years. This is the best that the macro-vision can testify to. A beautiful book, with engaging photographs, intelligent information, and, best of all, very rewarding recipes, all merging together to give the reader a healing and joyously appealing approach to a very diverse and often stringent lifestyle.Macrobiotics can be so utterly daunting, so conservative, unbending, and foreign, that we often throw the baby out with the bath water. Brown's book is informative without being preaching; kind, and encouraging. Do try it out. It is enormously beneficial.
