I use this for my daughter's 6th grade home schooling. I like the short lessons and answers in the back. The lessons are all random so they learn about planets one minute then vaccinations the next. That works for me because my daughter has a short attention span. So u read a 1 pg lesson then answer about 10 questions about what u read. At the end of the chapter there is a review test with about 20 questions. Not very challenging but it is perfect for my 11 year old daughter. Don't get me wrong, it's not for idiots. It's good.

I use this for homework for my middle school students. It’s better than other workbooks and is challenging enough. It’s actually too challenging for many of my students who read below grade level. I assign the 6th grade readings to my 7th and 8th graders

It's a large format 224-page paperback artbook with low gloss pages.This book serves as a visual companion and artbook. The concept art comes in the form of character and creature designs and environment art.The arrangement of content follows the chronological order of the story.. It starts with the third game, followed by first, fourth and second. Hence the 3142 in the book title. DmC Devil May Cry that was released in 2013 is not in this book because there's already a dedicated artbook just for that game.The artworks in this book consists of game stills as well as hand drawn art. It's about 50-50 game stills versus illustrated art. The character cutouts from game stills are used in the character profiles with provided background. The sketches and coloured illustrations are accompanied by artist commentary. The fourth game features predominantly drawn art and that also happens to be the section that I like best. I prefer looking at the artist interpretation than at the stills which you already can see in the game.In additional to the art from specific games, there's also an extra chapter with art from guest artists. The book is a collection of illustrations and images for the first four games in the Devil May Cry franchise. The book contains translated materials never before released in English. The last chapter contains interviews with several people involved in the development if each game.The book is a gold mine of information and art. Devil May Cry 2, especially, never had it's concept art released anywhere in the world and the other games have had a lot of the information here only available to Japanese readers so this is a treat for DMC fans that quite honestly, we should've gotten years ago.For the most part the book is great but it does have a few flaws.The print on the interviews and the illustrations is pretty small. It's not an issue with the tag under the illustrations but in the interviews in the back of the book they can be taxing on the eyes.Most of the commentary seems to be from memory rather than what has already been written in each game's respective artbooks. This isn't so bad for the later 3 games but the original DMC gets the short end of the stick since there is only commentary from a small part of the staff that worked on it and they can only remember so much after all this time. It would've been better to include the material from the original art book, which was more recently to the game's release.On that note, there are some key people missing from the book, like Hideki Kamiya (director of DMC1, Resident Evil 2, Okami, and Bayonetta), Shinji Mikami (DMC1 producer, RE creator and director of RE 1, 4, Zero, and Dino Crisis.) or Hiroyuki Kobayashi (Producer of DMC1 and 4). While the perspectives of the people that ARE in the book are insightful there are more key people that one wishes had participated or at the very least to have the material from previous art books been presented in this one.The Japanese release of this book had sleeve cover which is the cover for this release but the cover under that sleeve was pretty cool so it's a shame it couldn't be transferred to this publication.Other than that the book is nice, thick and sturdy. I made sure to look at every page in case one of the prints was off but it all checked out fine. the content is fantastic and the interviews are full of behind the scenes information you can't get elsewhere. It's a great buy for all DMC fans and one hopes that there might be other DMC art books translated in the future since they are full of information only Japanese readers get to know but that didn't get to make it to this particular release.

As an avid Devil May Cry fan, I love this graphic arts book! I learned a lot about DMC and the why they picked the character/clothing styles that they did. I also saw some characters that I wish had been included, but oh well. My only complaint is that there seem to be some inconsistencies. 1) At one point, the commentary states that Sparda killed Mundus, at another it says he sealed him off into the demon world(so, not killing him). 2) It also says that Nero's arm "transformed" into the arm it is now, when it's common knowledge that his arm was the result of an injury he received while fighting demons. Hence why his arm was in a sling and why Kyrie told him that his arm wasn't fully healed/he wasn't ready to fight in the beginning of DMC4. 3) It also stats Dante is in his 40's, yet Dante's own voice actor Reuben Langdon said he was in his 30's(and was told so by Capcom). 4) It states Nero is Vergil's son. Although this may or may not be true, I have serious doubts that Capcom, after 8 years of being pestered for an answer to Nero's lineage, would only announce his lineage in a graphics arts book. These were just a few of the odd things I noticed. Other than that, this product is a great addition to my collection!

Stuart Kauffman is a brilliant renaissance man; a man who was a playwright, philosopher, physician, and ultimately seminal theorist of the principles of complexity and emergence at the Santa Fe Institute. His ideas are widely influential, groundbreaking, and bear upon the largest questions: what is the origin of life? In the face of the 2nd law of thermodynamics, what explains the richness of order we observe all around us? What are the underlying mathematical principles of emergent phenomena? What are the underlying mathematical principles of evolution (both natural and technological)? Indeed, until Kauffman, I had trouble defining evolution without a tautology at all (i.e. "evolution is survival of the fittest - and 'the fittest' are defined as the ones who survive"). Kauffman gives you a lexicon for understanding evolution, including why there is more radical divergence of form in early evolution and less later on. The principles of emergence bear directly on such diverse topics as ontogeny, economics, the formation of galaxies, coevolution of related species, etc... "At Home in the Universe" is Kauffman's synthesis - his attempt to tie up his decades of work in an explanatory way for the layman. The book is full of intricate diagrams illustrating the concepts discussed and, while sometimes challenging, is readable by any moderately educated person. These ideas have the power to change people's world views - and certainly have transformed my own. Stuart Kauffman's ideas have resonated deeply for me and have inspired me in a multitude of ways.So, what's the problem? It's the writing. Kauffman can't seem to decide if he is writing a book of philosophy or a book of science. He spends an inordinate amount of space discussing the philosophical implications of his ideas, often before he has even presented the ideas - let alone the experimental or theoretical support. As a book of exposition of science, "At Home in the Universe" is almost inexcusably poor. He presents a complex idea accompanied by a complex diagram which he explains. Often, however, he fails to explain the nature of the experiment or research that generated the diagram. He doesn't describe experimental or theoretical support for these ideas. The paucity of descriptions of the science behind these powerful ideas is doubly galling in the presence of repetitive presentation of inappropriate philosophical analysis. Many times in the course of this book I had to throw up my hands in frustration, wishing for exposition of the experiments hinted at in the diagrams - and being given long range cultural and religious context in its stead. For God's sake, let me put the context together for myself! But please give me the evidence.In conclusion, this book ultimately teases. If you have any interest in emergence or complexity theory you will need to read this - the ideas are that profound. However, having read it, you will have to look elsewhere for empirical or theoretical support for the powerful ideas presented here.

This book takes a hard look at how life on earth came to be. Rather than buy into the idea that somehow life evolved via the "blind watchmaker" scenario (i.e., similar to the argument that an army of monkeys sitting at typewriters would eventually compose a great novel), Stuart Kauffman builds a terrific case that the ingredients essential to life are bound to the rules that govern complex adaptive systems. And the very presence of these rules send a strong signal that "we the living", are "we the intended."The author's conviction to both his argument and the science of complex systems is evident throughout the book. If you are coming to this book without much background in complex adaptive systems, you will not be short-changed here. In fact, Kauffman provides extremely rich examples with numerous simple diagrams to educate the reader as he builds his case. Considering the book was published some 7 years ago, I was surprised to see the concept of gene networks given so much attention in the text. Seeing how the latest trend in genomics research is looking at genes and proteins as a regulatory network and attempting to identify specific disease pathways, the science in this book is extremely relevant.

In the still not quite emerged area of emergence aka complexity/systems, some rare books look even better many years after their original publication. At Home in the Universe almost ranks with Gregory Bateson's Steps to an Ecology of Mind: Collected Essays in Anthropology, Psychiatry, Evolution, and Epistemology and Mind and Nature: A Necessary Unity (Advances in Systems Theory, Complexity, and the Human Sciences) in that regard. This is in part because the area has such a fragmented vocabulary, reflecting a range of approaches which Kauffman is largely across due to his leadership at Santa Fe Institute in its highly productive first decade when its search for interdisciplinary insight outranked the search for marketable applications. In a search I did for a 2007 paper, Kauffman was second only to Nobel laureate Ilya Prigogine for citations from the hard science end of the complex systems spectrum.There can be challenges in reading books like this and Bateson's in that significant parts have still not gained wider awareness. They can sound unfamiliar, lack substantive follow up and, I imagine, for those who have not long been on the emergence/complex/systems track, they may seem counter-intuitive. They predate catch phrases like "unknown unknowns" or "black swans" which might make their central relevance to today's challenges more obvious.Kauffman's unifying tactic is exploring how the least accessible parts of the panarchy of natural systems improve their position on fitness landscapes, a mathematical representation reliant on ready mental movement from higher dimensional state spaces to the hills and valleys of familiar physical topography. To that end, he has applied simplified models to search for general principles. His results support a strong case that large gains and radical change come early, after which it becomes an ever more difficult struggle to gainfully inch further from an established viable position. This principle enables him to propose convincing scenarios for the origin of life, the Cambrian explosion and contemporary technological change; arguably the three most significant things we could seek to understand since the origin of the multiverse.This book reflects the peak of Santa Fe's excitement over the edge of chaos--border of order, an idea for which I had come to feel the lone defender early this decade. It is a bemusing sidelight to finally reading this book in 2009, that my own as yet unpublished current research has finally made clear something that had been hinted at but never expressed outright since Wolfram's 1983 notion of Class 4 cellular automata: that we have set up a false dichotomy between chaos and order which we need to leave behind if we are ever to understand that essential complexity arises best in circumstances where there is creative synergy between even deterministic chaos and emergent order.My only real quibble with Kauffman is that he came to this work with a wish to justify his feeling that we should be "at home in the universe" rather than totally defined by historical contingencies, aka accidents. At least he is up front about wanting that finding and, by extension, an endorsement of capitalist/American triumphalism. It would have been preferable if he had come with an open mind to whatever he might find. I suspect reality might prove a bit more contingent than he would be comfortable with, but that his broad principles of fitness landscape navigation might also prove ever more useful as they are better understood.

I wasn't expecting much from a graphic novel but my sons like them, so I picked it up out of curiosity. The combination of Catholic and animation seemed like it would be at least a small win. I was mostly hoping that it wouldn't be too corny or too over the top. It was neither. The boys picked the book up right away and immediately began laughing, discussing, and asking questions. Sometimes it goes a bit above their heads, but that's a good opportunity for discussion.These two fellows, Brendan and Eric, go through a series of events and meet a variety of people as they find their way to "The Truth". The reader is introduced to some deep and philosophical concepts without having to break open the tomes of the Church Doctors. It builds a bit of a foundation and I do believe that when they decide to read the works of our saints they will have an easier time of it. I should confess that I enjoyed reading it, too. Bring on Volume 2!

This book was a short lesson in philosophy in addition to a introduction to Catholicism. I think that's the reason I gave it 4 stars; as a heads-up to the uninitiated. I am not an educated person so I had to re-read some of the first parts over and over to make sure I understood the reasoning. I am already a practicing Catholic and bought this to see if it would be of interest to my 13 year-old grandson. And that's why the philosophical aspect is a concern; a very young person, or one not familiar with rhetoric might be called on to think a little to get to the heart of the message. Now, thinking is a great thing! But if you are expecting a reader to be entertained and laugh their way to becoming a Catholic, it's probably not going to be that easy with this book. Still, graphic novels and comic books are a great way to grab the attention of some people, and if a reader is used to that format, this is the way to go. I plan to leave it lying around the house and hope grandson will pick it up and peek inside. God bless you, Amadeus!

I bought this for my precocious 8 year old. It is NOT for an 8 year old. (Despite that, he loved it—but I don’t think he could really understand it.). It is better suited for my teens. I also read it and could not put it down. I would like to give it to some of my friends for Christmas.

I can’t say enough good things about this book. My kids (ages 10 and 7) love it. It’s engaging, smart, and encourages kids (and adults!) to think and use their God-given reason. This is a really great, non-cheesy way for kids to learn about their Catholic faith and be entertained at the same time.

I put this in my oldest son's stocking last December. He was 14 at the time. Not only did he love it, his 12- and 10-year-old brothers did too. They were practically fighting over who got to read it when. The Truth is Out There is both entertaining and informative. I'm buying Volume 2 for this year's stocking. Shh! Don't tell!

I loved the book. Filled with great imagination and interesting story line. Great book for kids who may be wavering in their faith. I am so glad I read it.

This is an intelligent, truth filled, eye opening comic book. I could not put it down and kept on thinking of all the people that I want to give this book to. It made some of the things I know about God and the Catholic church clearer. Imagine that from a comic book! Fr. My 10 year old son loved this book. He said he can't wait for the next one. I'm very happy this type of book exists. There are so many influences pulling kids away from their faith. I'm always looking for new resources that explain the reasons to believe. He, however, tried to lend it to a friend who has no particular faith background and was upset that the boy wasn't interested in it.

Usually I buy books like this and realize that there really is nothing I would actually use. Let's face it with Pinterest and easy access to all kinds of smoothie and soup recipes why buy this book. Well, it's full of easy adaptable recipes and since purchasing I have used this every week to make a different soup for my lunch at work. I make it on Sunday and enjoy all week or freeze an individual portion or two for the next week. Super easy and full of useful information! It is on my kitchen counter for easy access! Since purchasing I have upped my intake of veggies and fruits!

I love all the ideas for healthy smoothies. I tend to get stuck with a couple standard recipes. This has broadened my horizons!

I love this book. As I try to cook healthy for myself and husband, we have loved the many soup recipes. I also have tried many of the smoothies. I have enjoyed the book so much that I gave one to my sister. Thank youJulia

I bought this book for the soups because I just bought an immersion blender and it has good recipes in it. The smoothies look great too but they are very high calorie so I will only be using a few of them but will try out the variety of soup options, I like the easy format and the color photos.

There is a good variety of options with brief descriptions of how they can improve overall health and skin.

A nice addition to your cookbooks if you are seeking new ways of eating vegetables.

very useful book. I have referred to it several times already. the descriptions about the nutritive value of foods is so informative and the recipes are great. so far have tried persimmon smoothie and cauliflower soup. great book congratulations.
