American author Kate Quinn's new historical novel "The Alice Network", is set in two times - 1915 and 1947 - and the two stories are told in alternating chapters. The first one is told in the third person, while the second is told in the first person. That's a tricky maneuver for the best writer, but Quinn carries off one section quite well, while doing not as well in the other. The first story is about a British spy network - the "Alice Network" -operating in German-occupied northwestern France. Most of the agents were women and they were led by a real character, Louise de Bettignies, whose code name was "Lili". She was joined by fictional British/French Evelyn Gardiner, whose code name was "Marguerite". Marguerite was posted to work in a French collaborator's restaurant in Lille, serving the German diners and picking up tidbits along the way she'd pass to Lili, her British handler. The second story is set in 1947 and is the story about Evelyn Gardiner - now aged - and Charlotte St Clair - a 19 year old American who has come over to France with her mother to obtain a safe, legal abortion in Switzerland. She meets up with Eve and Eve's chauffeur, a Scot soldier named Finn. They are all looking for something, someone, in post-WW2 France. The second part is definitely the weaker of the two sections. Somehow, Eve - who was drawn really well in the first section - has devolved a bit into a caricature in this section and neither Finn or Charlie seem too real, either. I'm giving the book 4 stars because the first part is 5 star, while the second is 3 star.By the way, Kate Quinn writes about a real incident that happened in a small town outside of Limoges a few days after the DDay landings in Normandy. The Germans destroyed a village called Oradour-sur-Glane and murdered most of the residents. All told, over 600 people were murdered by a detachment of the Waffin-SS, who were looking for French partisans, supposedly operating out of the village. If you're interested in knowing more about this heinous crime, please look into Ethan Mordden's marvelous short novel, "One Day in France". It was published in 2015 and is still in print.

It is an entertaining book and I enjoyed reading it, but I gave it only 3 stars because it has incongruences and a all-is-well one-star end.It is the story of 2 women, 2 wars and one nasty male traitor.Eve and her story in WWI is well written and very engaging. I admired how the author could recreate masterfully the atmosphere of occupied France and the life of a female secret agent who was working to spy on the German invaders. The male French collaborateur is also well depicted. Eve and her challenges are all real. The decadent verses of Bodelaire echoe in the air. I went to re-read "Les Fleurs du Mal". The predator -prey relationship is artistically defined. The story of Charlie, on the other hand, is weaker and tainted by an unrealistic modern American feministic approach. She is the second protagonist of this book: underaged, pregnant and searching for a purpose in life, she goes on a quest all by herself, against the wishes of a pathetic mother, trying to clarify what happened to her beloved cousin who disappeared during WWII. She's more predictable and less real. No girl in those days would find liberation and consolation to a PTSD by sleeping with all her university pals. Sex and self liberation were not connected. Her mother is more of a caricature of the ideal idiotic burgeoise maman than a true character. The Scottish hunk who accompanies both ladies in their quest is a little bit of a joke, a candy for dreaming housewives. It seems to spring out of one of those cheap romantic novels which you buy at gas stations and corner stores. The illustration on the cover would portray this handsome shirtless mechanic passionately embracing the beautiful young girl in the rear of a stunning 1900's collector car.The grand finale is bombastically unreal. It seems out of a Far West movie. In a nutshell: half of this book was truly great, the other half was a disappoiniment. Perhaps this stems from the fact that I had the privilege of hearing first hand stories from real French, Italian and German women, who lived during WWII and whose mothers lived during the previous war. This talented but somehow naive author seems to have grasped some of the truths of what happened and how people were during those days, but her modern North American cultural approach reveals that she has more groundwork to do.Personally, I found the end a literay mistake: unrealistic, rushed, over optimistic and somewhat childish.Â

Outstanding and mesmerizing are the two words that first came to mind as I finished The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. This story is wonderfully written with deep, rich and complex characters. With great details along with solid writing, Ms. Quinn expertly brought this amazing story to life. This story kept me deeply engrossed with thrilling suspense, intriguing espionage and heartbreaking moments. I’m normally not a fan of historical fiction of this time period (specifically WWI and WW2), but I could not put this book down for a second. In addition to reading this book, I listened to it as an audio book. The narrator, Saskia Maarleveld, did an AMAZING job with the characters and their accents. The character’s personalities and the story itself truly came to life with Maarleveld’s performance and took this already great story to another level of grandness that was unsurpassed.Overall, this was an amazing story that truly is a must read for any fan of historical fiction and one that I would highly recommend.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar by Roald DahlAs a child I was enthralled with Roald Dahl’s Hammer House of Horror series on the TV, as a father I delighted in reading all his children’s books, and now I got to his short stories for adults - The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar – collection. In addition to (spoiler alert) the card-trick-yogi being a modern reincarnation of Robin Hood converting money from casinos into orphanages, he has six other stories – all worth reading. The magic of these stories is the elegance of the plot and the way the main characters effortlessly weave the story. Seven stories like seven rivers or streams. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is definitely a river in this classification, undulating from beginning with a bored rich English bachelor who cheats on his friends, to an Indian who is more than a conjurer, to the temptation and metamorphosis of Henry Sugar. (Spoiler alert: he doesn't sell his soul like Doctor Faustus, and doesn’t turn into a cockroach; it is almost the opposite). The Hitch-hiker, The Boy Who Talked to Animals and The Swan are more like fast moving streams. Each treat honour and danger in different ways. The Swan was for me the most terrifying – a tale of two extraordinary bullies and their victim. The collection also contains two non-fiction pieces - The Mildenhall Treasure and A Piece of Cake. The Mildenhall Treasure is more a slow-moving river - an honourable farmer ploughs a field and… I won’t say more. Read it. A Piece of Cake is the story that launched Roald Dahl’s career and is about the author’s plane crash in the war, echoing (in a very different way), the crash of Antoine de Saint Exupery, or the artist Joseph Beuys. Three amazing artistic careers were launched by these near-death experiences. Not to be recommended as a means of literary or artistic development of course! The collection also contains advice from Roald Dahl on writing and how he became a writer, and his childhood at school, which reminds us that schools aren’t what they used to be; in this case that is a good thing. So, for writers looking for tools of the craft – Roald Dahl’s advice is to find a good plot. Keep paper handy and write down plots when they come to you. A sentence can be enough, even a single word - seeds for future stories.

An interesting start for a budding young Roald Dahl, who would eventually give us some of the greatest children's writing this side of Harry Potter. There's British wit, wonder and magic, but what makes this book special for me is that it isn't the same whimsical, occasionally eerie voice Dahl would later adopt for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Danny The Champion of the World, etc. These seven stories offer a more straightforward, workmanlike prose; the work of a magazine writer earning a living, rather than a legend spinning another bestselling tale. As a result, these read more like kid-friendly general audience short stories than many Dahl books (if you've read compilations of his work for adults, you're aware that they are decidedly NOT for younger audiences). For an advanced young reader, it's perfect, and for an adult, it's a light, joyous read.

He insults gay people, if I remember correctly, by implying the man who found the loot was gay. That was annoying. The treasure story about the loot is somewhat fabricated if you read about the historical record. Still good reading. I pulled up some cards and tried to guess the color and suite. I got about six in a row and thought I was Nostradamus.

I bought this in Kindle form and my young kids (ages 8-11) and I took turns reading paragraphs aloud over the summer break. We especially enjoyed the story of Henry Sugar, the hitch hiker, and the buried treasure. We didn't like the story about the little boy who was bullied and tortured by two thugs. We were hoping something bad would happen to the bullies but it never happened.

This was a book I loved as a tween and teen, and have now been introducing my children to, reading a story or part of one each night before bed. It helps children make the move from Dahl's stories for children, all about chocolate and magic and redemption for oppressed children, to his stories for adults, with stories that verge from magical realism to stories that are real but just highly unusual, like finding buried treasure or meeting a very skilled pickpocket. We've read the first few, and are now in the middle of the title story, "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar," which contains a story within a story and is longer and absolutely enthralling. I would recommend that parents of tweens and even younger teens skip over "The Swan" until their children are old enough to handle it. It's a beautifully written story, but could be pretty disturbing for sensitive children.

Very good - most of the stories are very believable. I think the best, most believable is the story "The swan" in spite of its somewhat unpleasant subject matter. This is definitely not your typical Roald Dahl book. There are no fearsome Snozzwangers, no friendly Fluffywuffies, and no grizzly deaths, just good wholesome reading, so whether I'd recommend this book to your child depends on what they want in a book

This collection of short stories by Roald Dahl brought back some memories from when I was a kid of maybe 8 or 9 years of age. I'd lost my copy of it years ago and forgotten about it until last night. I looked it up and it's a steal for five or six dollars for the Kindle edition. It's great to pass the time on a trip while en route to your destination, and at roughly a dollar a story, well worth buying and reading it again, even if it's been 20 some years have passed

This cookbook is frequently very vague and does not provide adequate instructions. For instance one recipe states "add one can coconut milk." How much coconut milk is that? Six, eight, maybe 16 ounces? Another recipe states "Add one tri tip roast" which will cook for eight hours yet neither the size of roast needed nor is the temperature it should cook is indicated. I may be new to cooking, but I know that the larger the roast, the longer it will take to cook and stating that you should cook it for eight hours is incorrect and a range of times is needed for many reasons. Another recipe calls for the cook to add "one tablespoon of your favorite herbs." If I know what herbs would work well in a recipe I wouldn't need a cook book! Another recipe calls for "0.7 pounds of beef stew meat" and " 0.4 pounds of chopped pumpkin. " How can some recipes be so vague and others so specific? I know that there are many variables when using the crock pot. Things like croc pot size, brand, etc affect cooking times and thus a range is needed. And without specific instructions you could easily wind up with a piece of meat or ingredients that will not fit into your pot. Or you could easily overcook or undercook your meal. Some foods such as pork require cooking in a specific manner or illness could result. None of these variables seem to have been taken into account in this cookbook. Many of the recipes read like someone made them up based on some vague memory of what they saw their grandmother put together when they were a child. The recipes do not state how many people the recipe will feed so how can the person cooking plan appropriately? Also the Book has NO PICTURES! And pictures are in my opinion a very important part of a cook book. Based on these specific issues I cannot recommend this cookbook.

HALF this book is telling about a keto diet...if I’m buying this book, I’ve already done that research. The recipes all seem just run of the mill, absolutely nothing original or even remotely interesting. I could overlook those things but what I can’t ignore is the fact that there is absolutely no nutritional information listed, in a cookbook of this type I would really love to see carbs, calories, fat content, etc listed...without that it is completely useless to me. Oh and the photos on the cover, I can’t seem to find those recipes anywhere in the book! It’s being returned!

This cookbook contains all the recipes with 5 ingredients that are Ketogenic as well. These recipes can be made use of easily in our daily busy lives. The recipes are specialized to cook in the crock-pot which makes them much easier to cook. In this book, the author discusses the details about the ketogenic diet and the specialty of the crock-pot in this cookbook. This book is well written and easy to understand. All instructions are very detailed, easy to follow and helpful. I have tried some recipes of this cookbook and all dishes were great. I'm glad to have this cookbook on my Kindle to use when I need it. I liked this book very much and I highly recommend it for those who want to eat delicious food and to be fit and healthy. Would recomended. Thanks auther

My cookbook arrived yesterday and I already have three things picked out to endeavor. Even though the romance between Heath and Annabelle took a long time to develop, the book was one of SEP's best. All her books are great- even the not so great ones- compared to other romance novels. Not to mention that it is one of the funniest ones I have read from her that did not detract from the story as a whole-which some of her other novels did.Heath is a self-made multi-millionaire sports agent-think Tom Cruise in Jerry McGuire-that has been climbing the social ladder since his trailer- park childhood, which gave him the drive to achieve more for his life. He feels that it is high time to settle down and find a pedigree wife; but with his hectic schedule finding such a paragon of class all by himself is not viable. This is wear our hapless yet adorable Annabelle comes along. She had inherited a home-based matchmaking company for seniors from her grandmother and had just started to update it and launch it for the modern market. Because of a friend's connection with Heath, she landed an interview with him to see if he would hire her to do the job that a multi-million matchmaking company had thus far failed to accomplish. The book had all of SEP's traits that has made her so successful-the writing is fantastic, the dialogue hilarious, the character development always thourough and in depth. But there was something missing in this book that really frustrated me--the ROMANCE development took WAY too long!!!... which is not what SEP usually does. At lease Annabelle had ruminations about Heath and her feelings for him, but even those were very limited. Heath's ruminations and conflict about Annablle were non existent up until the love making scene, which was towards the end of the book. But even with those major complaints-I just wanted more romance development between the two of them because I loved them so much-it did not affect my rating and recommending this book to any romance reader; this just tells you how good this book really is!!

She may be the black sheep of her uber-successful family, but Annabelle Granger marches to the beat of her own drum. She's taken over her grandmother's matchmaking business, renamed it Perfect for You, and is determined to make it successful. As part of the quest to do so, she's gotten one of her best friends to set up a meeting with one of the most eligible bachelors in town, rich, gorgeous sports agent, Heath Champion. Annabelle may not have the first clue why Heath would need to go to a matchmaker to find a wife, but he's contracted with a rival agency and Annabelle is convinced she can get him to become a client of hers if she just meets him.And things go exactly as planned...sorta. Well, okay, not really. Champion is an arrogant, overly entitled workaholic jerk and his demands are ridiculously unreasonable. Still, he's made a small concession and Annabelle sets her sights on making the most of the opportunity he's granted. He's also sexy as hell...not that she's given that any thought.Heath Champion has risen from poverty and survived an abusive father to become a self-made and highly educated man. He's an excellent agent and he dedicates his life to his clients. Now that he's approaching thirty-five he figures it's time he finds a suitable wife, but with his schedule he hardly has time. So he does the most practical thing he can think of; he hires a matchmaking firm to do it for him. Limiting his introductory meetings to twenty minutes, the ladies of Chicago are brought to him one by one between phone calls and business dealings, and it's going moderately well, he thinks. Until Annabelle walks into his office, late, looking bedraggled, and spouting off about her own matchmaking abilities. Two working to find him a wife has to be - at least marginally - better than one, no matter how little faith he has in Annabelle's dubious skills. Something about her, though, challenges him, and her absolute lack of suitable subservience to him is appealing in its own right. And she's sexy as hell...not that he's given that any thought.Susan Elizabeth Phillips has a fantastic romp in Match Me If You Can. Heath and Annabelle are great lead characters, and their dialogue is sassy, sarcastic, and so very much fun. The chemistry between them, first as friends, then as lovers, is some of the best in the genre, and Phillips is particularly good at the slow but realistic development of the relationship between them. Each character has personal issues and a few inner demons that add some depth and angst to the story and provides opportunity for personal development, and the arc of the story is fleshed out nicely with a strong supporting case of secondary and ancillary characters. While it could be said that the concept of the story borders on the silly, and the actions of both Annabelle and Heath sometimes tread the line between fantastic and farce, for a light read that's pure humorous enjoyment, this book has made it to the big game and delivered more than just nifty commercials.I wish I'd been as pleased with the minor plot thread of the relationship between Bodie and Portia, but I had a hard time with that one. It just didn't work for me. Maybe if it had been given a bit more room to grow and the characters afforded more development I would have been able to buy into it more than I did. Instead, I found Portia to be largely irredeemable until close to the very end and there wasn't enough provided for me to find her sympathetic through most of the book. I liked Bodie well enough, but again, would have preferred to have seen a bit more of him to get a better handle on him as a character. There were some deep issues motivating Portia, and some juicy details about Bodie's past. I think they could have supported their own story much better in a longer format.I wasn't totally sold on the conclusion of Match Me If You Can, either. The story was moving right along and getting to the meat of the central conflict between Heath and Annabelle, and things just went a little wonky. The inevitable blow up occurred a little abruptly and was resolved a little quickly for my taste given the depth of the issues each character has at the time. I appreciated the epilogue quite a bit, though, and the nifty way the book was wrapped up.From strictly a story perspective, I wouldn't say Match Me If You Can is perfect, but it was solidly good and a lot of pure, fun entertainment. I know it's the sixth book of the Chicago Stars series, but it worked well as a stand alone. I haven't read the first five books, so I can speak with authority (albeit a subjective one) on that. I can also say I enjoyed this one so much that I purchased the series opener, It Had to Be You so I could start the Chicago Stars series from the beginning.Phillips has a smooth, pleasant writing style and creates likable characters, putting them into sizzling situations (though sometimes that sizzle comes from the hotheadedness of her characters), much to a reader's supreme enjoyment. I'm looking forward to spending much more time in the Chicago Stars world. Similarities exist between this series and Kate Angell's Richmond Rogues series - though that one is centered around baseball. I'll be interested in seeing how those similarities - and differences, too - evidence themselves as I progress with this series. I've enjoyed the Rogues series so far, and things are looking just as good, if not better, in Phillips' Chicago Stars series.Reviewed for One Good Book Deserves Another.

Compared to all SEP's other work, Match Me was a let down. I love all her football series starting w/ it had to be You - and she has great characters but the story lacked the depth that she usually works into her characters. It was too pat that Bodie was rich and connected. And at the end, Heath has one session with her family and loves them to bits and we are supposed to buy into his idea of the family dynamics. In SEP's other stories like Nobody's Baby...the family felt real. Here- throughout the story SEP has them set up as some kind of irritant who always put her down and belittle her and so when they finally "root" for her, I just didnt buy it and I didn't even like them. So the end - where the hero grovels to the heroine - also didnt work- which is a shame because it worked really well in every other book of hers. Of SEP's work,my favorites have been Heaven Texas and Nobody's Baby.... Can anyone tell me why it doesn't work? Please, please let Dean Robillard's story have all the weight and humor of her older work.
