#14,946 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I first read this book (the edited down version) when I was nine years old, I received the book as a gift, and again when I was twelve for school. I recently re-read the book (the new un-edited version) and coming from an entirely different perspective now that I am a thirty year old mother.First, I want to say that I absolutely believe that this book should still be included in school curriculum. The only thing 'new' about it is that pages and passages were added. Nothing was taken out and the translation was not changed. Reports that the book is so different that it's nothing like the original are false. Reports that the story is different are false. There is no reason for the edited version to still be used because children read Anne Frank's diary around ages 11-14 years old which was around age when Anne herself was writing the diary. Anything that could be seen as supposedly "inappropriate" can be seen on daytime television with a PG or maybe PG-13 rating. Especially these days, there's definitely nothing in there that is beyond the norm for the average tween-teen. I think that continuing to use an edited version is insulting to Anne Frank's memory. Not only that, but it provides valuable information about the time period and gives more relateability to the diary. The passages which are included in the new version are not anything that the average 8-12 year old girl does not already know about her own body and the "birds and the bees", and are so few and short that they comprise a tiny percentage of the work itself. The romance between herself and Peter is very chaste and nothing untoward happens in the story. (Spoiler: they hold hands and a kiss a few times. that's it.) The passages that some see as inappropriate are not at all titillating, a medical textbook is more erotic. Coming from a mom's point of view, I would definitely allow my daughter to read the unedited book.I think this should stay on school book lists because some kids these days see the Holocaust as something that happened a long time ago that is meaningless now, without realizing that genocides and racial motivated violence still happens every day. I think it seems to them like just another thing they have to learn about along with The Hundred Years War and the Crusades.Anne Frank's diary gives kids perspective and helps makes the tragic loss of life during WWII a tangible thing they can understand. The diary is so relate-able and reflects so many feelings that all teens have had, that she becomes three dimensional to them and no longer a just some person that died a long time ago. This sensitivity towards the loss of a life is what we need now in the times we live in.As we read the diary we see how much potential was lost not only in Anne but in her entire family. Anne Frank was an intelligent and well-read young woman who studied multiple languages and had an analytical mind. I believe we lost a shining beacon of women's intelligence when she died. She was an emerging feminist, activist, and writer! I think she would have been an amazing woman who would have gone on to do great things. All that potential was lost millions of times over during WWII, and this is what we feel deep in our hearts upon closing the book. Most of the book is about the privations and hardship of living hidden away in the "annex". There is very little coverage of the violence of the times or much that is going on in the outside world because they had little knowledge of it since they were hidden. I think this is partly why some schoolchildren report the diary is boring. It does get repetitive at times, which reflects the feelings of those living in hiding. They had to wait and wait in fear, not knowing what the next day would bring. There are many self-reflective passages where Anne laments being picked on by the adults in the annex, wondering if she will live up to the expectations they have for her, hoping she can reach her goals. There is a thread of hope apparent even in her most depressing writings. I think these are the parts I think teens find most relate-able because all teens want to achieve things, please their parents, and find hope in their moments of despair.Toward the end of the diary we see just how difficult things have become for the family which is not always accurately represented in the movie versions of the diary. They were starving, never full at meals, and having to exist off moldy and tasteless food. There was one bathroom for eight people and at times the toilet could not be flushed. They had threadbare, holey clothing which was too small. The cat used the bathroom wherever it wanted towards the end, and their helpers came less and less frequently as circumstances got worse and worse. Their conditions deteriorated in ways that children living in the comfort of the 21st century could never imagine. It's so important for kids to read about these conditions and contrast them with their own in order to not only feel grateful but to feel sympathy for those who lived in these terrible times. The Kindle version had fairly large print and worked just fine on my phone and tablet with no issues. The new version has a new introduction and I believe the epilogue has changed a bit as well. I enjoyed the footnotes feature which allows you to touch the number which takes you to the footnotes page, then when you touch the number again it takes you back to the page you were originally on. I had no problems purchasing or downloading. If you want to know more about what happened to Anne Frank after the diary, there is a book called "The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank" by Willy Lindwer which includes stories from people who met her in the camps.Another recommendation is the author Eva Schloss who was Anne Frank's stepsister, who wrote about surviving Auschwitz.

This particular version of the diary is more authentic than the typical definitive edition commonly found on book shelves today. This is very close to “The Diary Of A Young Girl” that I read when I was 12. I am 60 years old now and am very happy this version is available for I do not care for the seemingly emptier more modern version. The version that was edited by Anne herself but then by Otto her father. In this particular version more information is given. Still, a lot of stuff is missing. I clearly recall parts from the version I read around 1969 have been removed. However this is a close cigar. To read the whole absolute diary one would go to the Critical Edition but it’s like a complete college course regarding the diary, it’s authenticity, translations, etc. I have that edition but am not interested in all the investigational information to determine if the diary is legit. The researchers did conclude that yes, it indeed it is. I cannot find the version I read in 1969 but to try and pull it out from the Critical Edition is difficult as it takes away her feel, her energy, some of her personality. Like I said, it’s more like a college course. My desire is to just simply read the diary. To get to know Anne all over again. So I definitely advise readers to go to this unabridged version. I am thrillled to have found it. If you want to enjoy Anne and get to enjoy her personality this is the best choice available today. Happy reading! I give it 5 stars.

Same edition as the one I have read from my local library. This appears to be as fine an edition as you can get, and I have done a fair amount of research on that. This, the "definitive edition" has a lot of material that did not appear in the original one that was edited by Anne's father after the war. It also is on superior paper, with very readable type, and the photos are clearly rendered, compared to the other editions I have had in hand.Wonderful book, the like of which I haven't seen elsewhere. So many wonderful passages, insights into life such as you rarely find anywhere. Anne's ruminations captured here were for herself, from the heart. Writing this helped so much in making her life tolerable during this very difficult period in her life. Toward the end, I found it difficult to plow to the end, knowing that she tragically did not survive. However, she was unaware that their arrest was imminent, so the unfortunate ending is not implicit in Anne's writing. She just may as well have survived and gone on to have the wonderful life and career she very much deserved. I have read a lot about WW II, but this book succeeded in doing what all the other readings did not for me -- it made me feel that I was living through it myself.

I bought this book to prepare for a trip to the Anne Frank Museum. It was a sad but fascinating read - and when I got to the Franks' hiding place in Amsterdam, I knew exactly what I was looking at, who slept where - and who all the individuals were that helped Anne, her family, and their companions survive for as long as they did. I think I got more out of the visit than I would have without reading this book.

This was great find. the games are excellent! There is something for everyone in this book. I would reccomend it to any music or drama teacher who needs ideas for class. And I would even recommend this to regular classroom teachers for use. It also came very quickly through mail. Thanks!

Love this

This book would be great for any activities director; I found that many are not quite what I am looking for for children's dance classes, and some are too lengthy to fit into a 45 minute class. But it definitely offers a wide variety of ideas for a range of ages.

I like it I use it for my kids dance class and got some good ideas. I would really like to have CDs with it I would have paid extra to have the suggested music with the book.

I failed to read the reviews about this book before I bought it. I did, however, preview some of the pages and thought the games that I saw were good, so I went ahead and purchased it. After receiving the book and reveiwing its contect I realized it was a waste of my money. The majority of the games have no substance and are rather silly. It seems like the author of this book was given a week to complete this project and just threw a bunch of silly activites together and called them dance games. I was very disappointed and would not recommend buying this book.

This is a very superficial activity book. Not only are the activities in it not very engaging, but most of the descriptions are very poorly worded. This is at best a guide for those dear people who think "dance" is for an elite class of people. You would be better off just teaching P.E. if this is what you consider creative. Better by far is a book called "First Steps in Teaching Creative Dance to Children" by Mary Joyce.Don't waste your money on this!

This book's activities are poorly described as well as being just plain corny. I cannot imagine the children I work with wanting to jump in and do these excersizes. Even in the spirit of pure play, I find these activities boring and silly (and not silly in a good way). If the activities had more depth, I could then use them to open up into a discussion or exploration. However, with the exception of a few, their relevance was insignificant. I cant see how any of these activities would break down walls, establish trust, inspire children to create, or even bring up a subject worth exploring, etc.

The Glass Castle: A Memoir (Scribner Classics), by Jeannette Walls

Review

"Jeannette Walls has carved a story with precision and grace out of one of the most chaotic, heartbreaking childhoods ever to be set down on the page. This deeply affecting memoir is a triumph in every possible way, and it does what all good books should: it affirms our faith in the human spirit." -- Dani Shapiro, author of Family History"The Glass Castle is the saga of the restless, indomitable Walls family, led by a grand eccentric and his tempestuous artist wife. Jeannette Walls has survived poverty, fires, and near starvation to triumph. She has written this amazing tale with honesty and love." -- Patricia Bosworth, author of Anything Your Little Heart Desires and Diane Arbus: A Biography"Just read the first pages of The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, and I defy you not to go on. It's funny and sad and quirky and loving. I was incredibly touched by it." -- Dominick Dunne, author of The Way We Lived Then: Recollections of a Well-Known Name Dropper

I just love this story about growing up dirt poor in one of the poorest and most depressing coal mining towns in West Virginia. I am a West Virginian, and there were many poor and alcoholic coal miners in my family, so I can really relate to the struggles this family faced. Ms Walls does an excellent job of telling her story so the reader feels like they were there. I could feel her pain, anger and disappointment to the point that I shed tears more than once. I read the book shortly after it was published, and just read it again after seeing the movie, which was also excellent. This book is easily one of my top five best books ever.

This was a memorable and troubling story written from a child's perspective (my favourite kind of story). Folks are commenting that Jeannette did not judge or condemn her parents for their miserable failings. What I suspect is simply that she was highly intelligent and had keen insight into their psychology and knew, on a deeper level than most children, they were "doing the best they could" in a sense. Only she knows what is in her heart. I got the sense she accepted and saw reality clearly. Her zest for life, insatiable curiosity and hopeful-ness in spite of her parents' failings made her a rare exception among people who are raised in such a way, in my opinion. What I admire most about her is that she never gave up and resigned herself or allowed what was clearly abnormal to become normal.

Excellent description of places, excellent representation of how people speak, excellent presentation of the children's growing maturity and awareness. The author writes with compassion for her parents, but as a reader this book made me angry over and over as the adults indulged themselves with selfishness, immaturity, and alcoholism, leaving themselves and their children hungry and cold and the children haphazardly educated, even molested. The children's transition from a life of abject poverty to new lives in New York City is painted with broad strokes, and I can't help thinking there's another book in there. They would have had to learn how to live as adults in an urban environment, how to relate to people differently, how to see themselves as something other than the bottom of the social structure. When the author presents the scene in which she learns that her mother actually had a substantial amount of money - a fact that is hinted at throughout the book - and fully understands that none of it had to happen, she handles it without anger. The closing scene with its repetition of the image, "dancing along the border between turbulence and order," is satisfying.

I began to doubt the truth of this memoir when she referred to Fish Creek Canyon, Arizona, as being West of Bullhead City. The only state West of Bullhead City is Nevada and Fish Creek Canyon is far to the East in the Superstition Mountains near Phoenix Arizona. Sloppy work. Where is the publisher's fact-checker? If one writes about place and from place they need to know what they are talking about. I also found her descriptions of the desert generic. The Sonoran is not the northern basin-range.

This book was disturbing and depressing. I had hoped that the author would share some sort of insight into surviving neglect and abuse, but I sensed a sort of "top this" arrogance in her writing. She described her childhood as an adventure. Her recounting was emotionless. This is not a book that will help survivors of abuse. Perhaps it is for those who never experienced such hardship and find it fascinating. I read a few chapters. Now I am deciding whether to put this book on the shelf or simply throw it in the fire.

Jeannette Walls's memoir focuses on her dysfunctional family life with a severely alcoholic father and an irresponsible dreamer of a mother. The poverty they experience is absolutely wrenching. Yet through it all, Jeannette and her siblings emerge as responsible successful adults in overwhelmingly difficult circumstances. It's a quick, wonderful read.

Excellent read. I finished this book in 42 hours. I could not put it down. I was surprised and amazed to hear it was on the New York Times best sellers list for 2 years in a row. Amazing. Not only did this book remind me of my own childhood. It reminded me of how far i have come and how grateful i am for all of my blessings. If you ever hear of anyone complain about their finances, send them to read this book. I commend the parents in this book for having emotional issues yet NEVER ripping away at the emotional beings of the children. One of my favorite lines is when the Dad said to Jeannette she has an "Inner Beauty". So touching. My 14 year old daughter brought this book home from school Friday the 20th Shouting in excitement and waving it in front of me saying MOM you have to read this book, I finished it 5:30 in the morning Sunday the 22nd. Couldn't even wait to get my amazon order on Sunday. I ate this book up. Thank you Jeannette Walls for writing your story, my daughter has had food every single day of her entire life. Now she knows my childhood stories are not crazy and i was not the only one who grew up starving. Blessings to you and yours. Heather Renee

A lot of very detailed pages, not just steam punk girls or guys. Not sure how to color or if I can due to migraines or vertigo. Wish I knew it had small details like this. I colored one so far.

My friend I gave this to loved it, it wasn't for me tho. Paper a bit average and images didn't always take up a lot of space on the page.

The older grandchildren loved it

Great Product

I thought it would have more steampunk animals in it. I am pleased with the fact that it has a gecko and the dragon fly.
