From the Inside Flap

*Why do seemingly rational, intelligent people commit acts of cruelty and violence? *What are the root causes of destructive behavior? *How can we control the emotions that drive these impulses? *Can we learn to live at peace with ourselves and others? Imagine sitting with the Dalai Lama in his private meeting room with a small group of world-class scientists and philosophers. The talk is lively and fascinating as these leading minds grapple with age-old questions of compelling contemporary urgency. Daniel Goleman, the internationally bestselling author of Emotional Intelligence, provides the illuminating commentary--and reports on the breakthrough research this historic gathering inspired. Destructive Emotions Buddhist philosophy tells us that all personal unhappiness and interpersonal conflict lie in the "three poisons": craving, anger, and delusion. It also provides antidotes of astonishing psychological sophistication--which are now being confirmed by modern neuroscience. With new high-tech devices, scientists can peer inside the brain centers that calm the inner storms of rage and fear. They also can demonstrate that awareness-training strategies such as meditation strengthen emotional stability--and greatly enhance our positive moods. The distinguished panel members report these recent findings and debate an exhilarating range of other topics: What role do destructive emotions play in human evolution? Are they "hardwired" in our bodies? Are they universal, or does culture determine how we feel? How can we nurture the compassion that is also our birthright? We learn how practices that reduce negativity have also been shown to bolster the immune system. Here, too, is an enlightened proposal for a school-based program of social and emotional learning that can help our children increase self-awareness, manage their anger, and become more empathetic. Throughout, these provocative ideas are brought to life by the play of personalities, by the Dalai Lama's probing questions, and by his surprising sense of humor. Although there are no easy answers, the dialogues, which are part of a series sponsored by the Mind and Life Institute, chart an ultimately hopeful course. They are sure to spark discussion among educators, religious and political leaders, parents--and all people who seek peace for themselves and the world. "The Mind and Life Institute sponsors cross-cultural dialogues that bring together the Dalai Lama and other Buddhist scholars with Western scientists and philosophers. "Mind and Life VIII, on which this book is based, took place in Dharamsala, India, in March 2000. "From the Hardcover edition.

In this book Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence books, chronicles Dalai Lama's latest efforts to promote an ongoing conversation between Western scientists and practitioners of meditation and Buddhism. It includes a number of interesting chapters that outline the methods and results Western scientists have been able to produce by studying the state of the mind of highly trained meditators. It also explores negative emotions, ways to understand them, and ways to avoid them. Personally, I found the book very thought provoking and absorbing. You will definitely question your own emotional states, moods, and personality. If you have never read anything about the Dalai Lama or practiced meditation, it's impact may be lessened.

"Destructive Emotions" is an account of one of the earliest meetings of the Mind and Life Symposium. These events started as a way for the Dalai Lama to learn how western science can be compared, contrasted, and perhaps integrated - as he has said repeatedly, "If science proves Buddhism wrong, then Buddhism must change."This particular meeting drove Richard Davidson's original imaging experiments examining the effects of meditation on the brain. By showing how meditation affected brain structure and activity, the scientific arguments for meditation were made. The description of the experiments and their implications is a major feature of this book, and is worth a read for anyone interested in the origins of the mindfulness movement. For a document covering both science and spirituality, it's surprisingly accessible. Daniel Goleman writes lucidly. You don't need to be a scientist or a Buddhist to enjoy reading this book.

In general, I liked this book and found it useful. I thing it contains a lot of good concepts, but because of the dialogue format it is difficult to get one's arms around all the concepts. There are also some holes that are left unaddressed, again probably because of the format.Given the above context, I think that there are many gems in this book and a lot of practical advice. Reading the dialogue between all these prominent people is thought provoking and challenges you to consider the underlying assumptions of your own emotional life. There is a lot of good advice in this book about handling destructive emotions, but the scope is actually wider than that. I found it to be more of an exploration of the nature of emotion and how to live with emotions in a balanced way. There are advantages and disadvantages to this approach to writing. There are a number of reviews that praise this book and others that shoot it down. I think the reality is somewhere in the middle. The people engaged in the dialogue are great choices, but somehow when the book went to print I think the written form missed capturing the full spirit of what went on at the actual event. I wasn't there, but I get a sense that in the transfer from speaking to writing some important meanings didn't come across. In spite of my feedback above, I wouldn't be discouraged from buying this book. It is unique and has a lot to say. My three star rating is merely an indication that I think the information could have been presented better and perhaps elaborated on in a way that brought the concepts more to life.

Years ago, thinking the Dalai Lama doesn't lead a normal life in the midst of a chaotic society, I did not study his teaching until I had a chance to read this book. Boy was I wrong! He understands human emotions at the deepest and most profound level that no man or psychologist has before. When translated and explained in lay men's terms, I can now hope that Buddhism will bring tremendous relief to the stressed out working population of the US. We allow our negative emotions too much control. This book will lead most of us out of our dark cell into a happier place.

Content/Information is solid and fascinating- but the first 60 or so pages were hard to get through (as in not so interesting.)

I fired my therapist after reading this. I highly recommend it. Dalai Lama rocks!

A excellent if informal presentation of intriguing occidental neuropsychologicsl research at many times through the lens of Buddhist Psychology. Those familiar with DBT will find its basis on page 134 of the trade paper edition. Must reading for anyone treating trauma survivors with complexPTSD and very good in tandem with Judith Herman's TRAUMA ANDRECOVERY.

This is the evidence that shows why we are suffering so much and it provides a wonderful way of handling our emotions. It describes a series of talks between western scientists and the dalai lama with other buddhist masters, where they all discuss about destructive emotions. The buddhist perspective on this topic is very interesting and I am sure we all can benefit from it.

Lachlan has been imprisoned and tortured in the catacombs under Paris for 150 years by vampires, but the day he scents his true mate somewhere above him, he finds the strength to break his bonds except the one binding his leg. His need to find her is so great that he breaks his own leg and leaves it behind, knowing that it will regenerate. When he finally finds her and discovers she is vampire, her can't believe his misfortune. Vampires are mortal enemies of the Lykae and he is the king of the Lukas. He quickly gets past his issues with Emma's lineage, but not so with Emma. She does not feel the same pull that he does and fears him more than anything. I love the way Emma becomes her own person in this story; she starts out timid and becomes a warrior. I also found Lachlan's devotion to his mate endearing. The world they live in is well laid out in the beginning so there is little confusion as the story progresses. Excellent story telling.Story: 5Writing: 5Characters: 5Editing: 5Heat index: 4.5

So I have bought and read everything Kresley Cole has ever written. She is a fantastic author and one of my absolute favourites. This book is a great start to the series (Its not my favourite, but it is still great). It is however, noticeably different on the Kindle format than the paperback. I used to own the hardcopy but a trans-continental move forced me to convert to Kindle. There are some discrepancies between the 2 copies. I honestly think the kindle version is better.I would seriously recommend getting this book, and you should just go ahead and buy all the others in the series at the same time because you are going to end up doing it, might as well buy them all at once!

This is probably only my second or third read of this book, I'm re-reading the series in preparation for the release of the fourteenth book in the series - someone's book that I've been looking forward to for a few years now. But I won't spoil that here.Kresley Cole is a master of weaving together an intricate tale that involves overlapping storylines, and many, many characters. The Immortals After Dark world is populated by the Lore - immortal beings that have managed to hide themselves from humans, for the most part. There are Lykae - not the standard werewolves you may be thinking of; Witches, Vampires, Demons, Ghouls, Phantoms...and my personal favorite: Valkyries. All these factions fight for themselves, looking for their other half - whatever they call it, Mate, Bride, etc - and living their lives. Every five-hundred years comes the Accession to mess that up. As told in the book, the Accession..."...Bringing prosperity and power to the victors, the Accession wasn't an Armageddon type of war--it wasn't as if the strongest factions of the Lore met on neutral turf after an invitation to "rumble." About a decade into it, events began to come into play, as if fate was seeding future, deadly conflicts, involving all the players at a startling rate. Like windmill vanes on a rusted spoke, it began creaking, creeping to life, only to gain momentum and soar with speed every five hundred years. Some said it was a kind of cosmic checks-and-balances system for an ever-growing population of immortals, forcing them to kill each other off.In the end, the faction that lost the fewest of their kind won."So here we are; at the beginning of what many in the Lore are starting to believe is the start of the Accession. A time when immortals find their mates - sometimes in very unexpected places, alliances are made or discord is sown between the different factions of the Lore.I'm speaking a lot about the world, because after thirteen books it's still my favorite thing about this series. The world and overall plotting is masterful. Kresley Cole blows my mind time and time again with the way she casually ties things together, references events we won't hear about for books to come, and never once have I caught a slip or mistake in these books. I'm awed by the ability she has to keep it all straight. There's a side reference in this book, Book 2, that doesn't get fully explained until Book 9! All of these events are taking place so close together as to be on top of one another. You're always right in the middle of it, hoping that these characters you come to love will make it through. The other thing I can guarantee you, in every book, is that Kresley Cole loves to put her heroes and heroines through the wringer before giving them their HEA. Not just at the hands of others either - she pushes these characters to the very limits of what they might be able to forgive their fated other-half...and for some it might step over the line. I struggle with this from time to time. I read these books, I love these books, and even still I wonder if I shouldn't be objecting more to some of the treatment the characters do to one another.I suppose I should talk about the main characters of this book: Emma and Lachlain. Emma is the half-breed daughter of a vampire and a valkyrie. She's been raised by the valkyrie, hidden from the vampires, her entire life. Lachlain is the lykae king - imprisoned for 150 years (by vampires), he finally breaks free to find his mate.As you can imagine the fact that Emma is (part) vampire is a source of tremendous torture to Lachlain's fragile sanity. He can't imagine why he's been mated to one of his hated enemies, but still he fights to protect her, even from his own rages. I definitely understood what Lachlain was struggling with, and honestly his recovery is really, really quick - just the hell that he puts Emma through in the meantime can sometimes be cringe-worthy. I like him a lot. He's like the prototype of 'bash-em-over-the-head-and-drag-her-back-to-the-cave' type. But he's also all - and I do mean ALL - about making sure his mate is happy. He makes mistakes, so it's a good thing he's got Emma to call him on it, and bring him into line.Almost as much as I hate to say this, everything that happens to Emma just makes her stronger, more sure of herself, and more able to handle everything thrown at her. She starts the book as Emma the Timid. The most exciting thing she's ever done is go to Paris by herself to search for the father - whose name she doesn't even know. And even then she was protected by the money she had from the coven to protect her. She continues to think of herself as this in some small moments for about half the book. The truth is something far more complicated. Emma's been conditioned to think she's not good enough, not strong enough, not brave enough. It wasn't intentional, it wasn't anyone's fault, but the consequences of growing up with those that she did - the strong, brave, and fighting valkyries. She shows from very early on that she's not afraid to defend herself, think for herself, and stands up against Lachlain over and over again.I admit the first time I read this I didn't love Lachlain or Emma. I liked them both, but I was irritated with how Lachlain treated Emma (especially in the beginning), and Emma's timidity. I'd bought too much into her own image of herself instead of seeing what was shown to me. I loved Emma on this re-read. She's fantastic. She continues to grow and evolve as a character throughout the book, and kicks ass along the way. Lachlain I still have some problems with. He does some pretty neanderthal things, especially in the beginning, but I understand too. He's coming out of fifteen decades of torture, and has finally found his mate and is terrified that she might leave him. By the time Emma reached the end of the story I felt that Lachlain was a good match for her, and that they'd be great together. In the end, I ended up loving this book so much more than the first time I'd read it. the main characters are great, the world is phenomenal, the plot is amazing, and the secondary characters continue to make me wish for many, many more stories in this series!

"He'd waited a millennium for a helpless parasite."FINAL DECISION: Fabulous story between a sexy werewolf and a half vampire/half Valkyrie. There is humor and paranormal adventure and pure sexiness and romance. Loved it.THE STORY: Lachlain Macrieve has been tortured by vampires for over a century. A werewolf and the leader of the Lykae Clan, Lachlan escapes from his torment when he scents his mate. Having search for her for centuries, her appearance gives him strength. When he discovers her, he is shocked and dismayed to discover that she is a vampire -- the mortal enemies of the Lykae. Emmaline Troy aka Emma the Timid, is half vampire and half Valkyrie. Young in immortal years, Emma fears pain and is highly protected by her adoptive family of Valkyrie. Her encounter with the wild Lachlan begins to transform Emma into the woman she was meant to be.OPINION: I can't believe that it took me so long to discover the Immortals After Dark series. Sexy, funny and exciting, this novel was a fast read because I couldn't put it down. Lachlan is very close to his beast side when he meets Emma. He is frightening and demanding and definitely the alpha male. Emma is fragile and innocent and doesn't believe in herself. Her progression throughout the book is amazing. By the time the ending of the book arrives, she has changed and changed Lachlan.I like that this book really approaches the issues of the prejudices, lack of understanding, and old emnity between the different immortals groups. The characters are strong and well-defined and each character in the story has a separate identity and I want to know more about each of them. For me the fact that I was satisfied with this book and yet want more is the sign of a great series.WORTH MENTIONING: Cole has created a very complex world and the overarching story is beginning to play out.CONNECTED BOOKS: A HUNGER LIKE NO OTHER is the second book in the Immortals After Dark series. It can be read as a standalone.STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

very happy with this product - thank you all :)

This book should be required reading in college social science courses and should be discussed in every law school. The book goes into great detail about the history of the American Bar Association and the rise of the legal profession in America. It documents how the ABA gained control of the legal profession in the early part of the 20th Century and what it did to discourage blacks and women from earning a law license. The history of law in this country isn't a pretty picture and by tracing its roots the public would better understand why the legal profession is held in such low esteem by a large segment on the public.

Culture Care: Reconnecting with Beauty for Our Common Life, by Makoto Fujimura

Review

"For Makoto Fujimura, caring deeply for souls is a way of life. Through his magnificent paintings, profound essays, and wider leadership with organizations like the National Council on the Arts and the Brehm Center at Fuller Seminary, Fujimura quietly and consistently nurtures artists and the people who love them, both inside and outside the church. In this life-giving book, he cultivates practices that help us honor God by caring for the soul of our culture." (Philip Ryken, president, Wheaton College)"In his generous and inspiring work Culture Care, artist Mako Fujimura suggests that our common culture is not a territory to be captured, but a garden to be cultivated, needing the nourishment of creativity, community, connection, and the generation of beauty. It is a grace-filled call to beat swords into plowshares and take up the work of tilling our common garden." (Cherie Harder, president, The Trinity Forum)"What kind of culture do we wish to live within, and how do we get there from here? This is the core question addressed in Culture Care, a book suffused with kindness and generosity. It is a book that goes beyond imagination to generation. It suggests and exemplifies ways of being that can help to create well-being. What is the opposite of a vicious cycle―a cycle benevolent, humane, and self-potentiating? We need a term. We need it to name the effect that this wise book can have if we read it, share it, live it." (Robert Schultz, writer, artist, John P. Fishwick Professor of English, Roanoke College)"With much compassion and courage, Makoto compels us to take our calling seriously to care for and cultivate the cultural soil in which we reside. He encourages us to view culture care as a biblical alternative against the prevalent culture of anxiety and scarcity. This is a posture every follower of Jesus should nurture to embody the gospel." (Mark Raja, designer, cofounder of Integrated Arts Movement, Bangalore)"Culture Care is a beautiful and powerful work of art, and it is about much more than culture, art, beauty, and aesthetics; it is about nothing less than what it means to be human. We all have a spirit that is thirsty for culture, as do societies at large. This book serves up a powerful warning about what happens when that thirst is not quenched; given the state of the world today, I can only hope that everyone in a leadership position reads, rereads, and ponders what he or she can do to care about culture, and actively so." (John C. Bravman, president, Bucknell University)"While serving with Mako Fujimura on the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, I often experienced his soft-spoken words. When Mako spoke, I wanted to listen because his words brought insight and meaning. The same is true of this book. As I read Mako's words, I listen, allowing them to leave imprints of wisdom on my heart." (Adair Margo, Tom Lea Institute, El Paso, Texas)"My friend Mako Fujimura is one of the most thoughtful, sensitive, and eloquent artists of this generation." (Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy)"Mako offers helpful insights not only for artists, but for all partners in culture care. His acknowledgment of the importance of addressing brokenness, creating safe spaces for sharing journeys, and truth telling reflects an appreciation of the relational and transformational power of engaging in culture care. While the reader could be overwhelmed by the pervasiveness of the challenges, Mako inspires us toward meaningful action. A wonderful contribution!" (Alexis Abernethy, professor of psychology, Fuller Theological Seminary)"When I first opened up Culture Care one night in Taipei and began reading, I knew that it was an important and essential work for today's artists. As I read, the book kept opening up like a flower of revelation. It helped define for me what I have been doing for a long time: culture care. I never had a word for it before. It has also helped me see myself differently as an artist. Culture Care gives the artist dignity and purpose, something that the church and society never gave me. The church never acknowledged art as a worthy vocation with a godly purpose, and society never fully recognized me either. So that's where I've always lived and worked―on the outside. But we are not alone and we are right where we belong!" (James Elaine, artist and curator)"The valuable lessons and insights in Culture Care are essential to reformation, renewal, hope, and subsequently the restoration of our culture and communities to wholeness. Mako captures what really matters in life: glorifying God in all aspects of our lives and our communities." (Mike Brenan, state president, BB&T, trustee, The Trinity Forum)

I have mixed feelings about this book. I gave it four stars because just the chapter on Emily Dickenson and Vincent Van Gogh, and their relationship with society and the church was well worth the price to me. The book has other strengths, too. Fujimura does seem to be a bit elitist, as he thinks we should rely on experts from the arts and social sciences to teach us how to understand the arts, including literature and music. I think we could do without that, thank you very much. I did enjoy the sample of his work shared in the beginning of the book. He does lovely art work himself, and he is insightful insofar as the dreadful consequences of the materialistic, utilitarian philosophy that has deluged our culture and the church. As he points out, it's high time we got it together.

Fujimura addresses many issues facing artists, their potential roles in society, evaluates what might or might not be important, and puts forth creative suggestions from principle and his experience. I made a lot of highlights in the book and took notes and will certainly incorporate some of his insights into my life.

This book was motivating and practical at the same time; would recommend it to cultural leaders, makers and artists of all kinds.

I crucial book.

Just wonderful.

Excellent opportunity for interesting discussions. Definitely recommend.

Fujimura has some very valuable things to say about culture and cultural stewardship, as well as invaluable insights into the role and value of artists in the community, and how communities can best raise up and support these types of individuals. He writes beautifully of the diversity and inter-dependence of healthy communities, and presents a fantastic model of how Christian communities can effectively interact with the culture and communities around them. This book has definitely changed how I define the role of the Church in shepherding its people with regard to culture.

I stumbled on his previous book quite by chance and loved it. I had to get this one to see if the writing grabbed my attention like the previous book. I was not disappointed. He writes beautifully and thoughtfully on the intersection of art, faith and the act of creating culture and community. Timely messages for our fragile world.

In her book,”The Holy Wild, A Heathen Bible for the Untamed Woman,” Danielle Dulsky has accomplished a wondrous feat. She has formed an actual working manual for any woman ready to discard her old life she has outgrown and is ready to live an authentic life true of her current desires and needs. It has shaken me to my bones more times than I count as I, myself, am in that phase of life, having outgrown my job and the need to oblige to family expectations. I believe this book comes at a time when many women find themselves in similar places.Danielle somehow includes all of us and invites us into a journey of our own making. We understand the true light (and dark) of the Goddesses and ourselves. We see how we too are goddesses because of what is already in us, as we relate to their stories. And, we find the story within ourselves that we never knew was there, through the writing prompts she shares. There are powerful rituals to cement phases of our journeys deep within our bodies, because without feeling it in our bodies, sometimes it doesn’t seem real. This book can be used as a guide for years to come at various stages of a woman’s life and truly is a miracle.

First Class Witchery!Daniel Dulskys' book takes you on a brilliant Red Thread Journey through the Elementals via sub-chapters on Verses (lovelovelove), Rituals & Magick, all of which beckons the Witch more fully unto herself and into the Deep Well of the Feminine Divine. The Feminist in me, also loves that she makes liberal use of Naming, Looking, Reclaiming and Re-visioning as well! There are Goddesses and Archetypes to work with, each with a Feminist re-visioning and retelling which will having you see the world differently. The accompanying exercises are compelling, and you won't stop thinking about them till you do them. (I did them ALL -something I am rarely motivated to do!)As a seasoned Witch, I pick up these witchery books & never expect much, but this one is different. The prompts are very inspired & obviously written by someone who knows what she is doing. The activities are well thought out and experiential You will FEEL the many many women who have done this before :). It definitely sparks one owns imagination in ways that go well off the page!As an Adept, you'll know exactly what to do with these ideas, and how to use it to take off- As a beginner, you will be in for one heck of a deep dive! Get the book!

I have the pleasure of being a yoga student of the author. Much like her classes, this book is an invite to go on a journey within yourself and use creative writing & art as a medium and develop personal spiritual practices based on Dulsky’s guidance. I anxiously awaited the turn of each page to see how I could be enlightened and led to creative work through my digging of my lost feminine along with that of the Worlds’. Dulsky accomplishes explanation, with out heavy finger-pointing blame, of the lost feminine in our society structures. She creates an invitation to mythwork and practices offering wiggle room to claim a name for yourself (or not, as she repeatedly states that you are unique). The Holy Wild takes you on a head-first deep dive into nature’s Holy Wild elements while revealing the secrets of yourself, to yourself, spreading out into the world and the Ether. Nature is our beacon home. Highly recommended! Let this provocative Creatrix entice you! My artwork in the above photos were led through Dulsky’s ‘The Holy Wild’.I very much utilized the highlighting & notes features of the Kindle Fire to copy & paste prompts in the mythwork. It was ideal for instantly capturing my thoughts as I read and helpful to return to and print out.

I really wanted to like this book. Everything about it had me excited but when I sat down to read it I was disappointed. The author tries really hard, maybe actually that might be the problem, maybe she tries too hard. She uses beautiful language and the subject matter is right up my alley but none of it flows. From the beginning it seems to fumble and bounce around. The focus seems to be more on using dramatic language and subject matter rather than the ease of which the story can be read. It should be spellbinding but instead it seems forced. It was a valiant effort but I just wasn't impressed which I hate to say because I follow the author on Instagram and was so excited to read it.

Review from Jaclyn Cherie, Creatrix of The Nephilim Rising:In Danielle's second book she brings the reader into the deep forest, and deepest parts of our Pysche--guiding us each step of the way. This is a book that is an elemental journey through Earth, Air, Fire, Water and, often forgotten, Ether; with poetry, prose, war cries and ritual, Danielle delivers to her a reader a book that is a complete journey through what we have been conditioned to believe and be, and how to uncondition ourselves; with her primal words of wisdom Danielle helps us rebirth ourselves as what we were always meant to be: wild.As I said in my review on Goodreads, this book is a balm for the Wild Woman's Soul and for anyone who hears the call of the wild and doesn't know where to start; this book is not only a perfect starting point, it's the ultimate destination.Page by page you will find your voice and by the end, you will be howling.

This book, like Danielle’s first book, has my eyes full of tears and my belly full of fire. I just received it two days ago, and I’m just about screamed when it finally arrived! This book feels so necessary to the reclaiming of the divine feminine. I am so grateful for the empowering words she shares with us. This collection of words, ritual, and divine wild woman truth is unreal, I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoy the journaling prompts through out that make it easy to remember and see what I am taking in from my journey! Thank you Danielle! You’re killing it!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
