This is an extremely well written book that relentlessly and completely gives the lie to the oft-spoken idea that large sporting events like the Olympics and World Cup are economic gold mines for host cities or countries. Simply put, they aren't. But it's worse than that. Andrew Zimbalist uses facts, pertinent economic explanations, humor and irony to explain how host cities are nearly all left with economic disasters after the Olympics and World Cup leave town, taking most of the financial gain with them. The book showcases the sometimes insane euphoria, and big cash, that goes into bidding for world class sporting events with promises of increased tourism during the games that extends after the games, increased cache and economic preimenance that go along with hosting such events.Zimbalist does a fantastic job of explaining that the Olympic Games don't even bring more tourists to a city while they are happening, let alone for years afterward. London actually had fewer tourists in the Summer of 2012. As for the supposed cache attached to host cities, this book explains it can all go bad if there is a terrorist attack, protests, or, as in Brazil, deaths associated with the construction of venues. And the book showcases how the 'legacy' of hosting these events can often turn into a public relations nightmare when, like Athens and Beijing there are rotting stadiums that scar the landscape, or, like Sochi, you leave an impression of an infrastructure mess. And for those cities who eagerly jump at the chance for a bid, they often cite the 1984 Olympic Games in LA (which turned a modest profit) and the 1992 Barcelona Games, (which excellerated that city's rise as a city of consequence), Zimbalist clearly why those two cities are singular events, not easily reproduced.I love the Olympics. This book tells another side of the story beyond the athletic drama of the games. After reading this book, I hope my city never even bids for an Olympics.

Through the use of extensive facts and data Zimbalist makes the case that the Olympic committees and promoters are only concerned with their own profit and power. Everyone in Massachusetts who will vote on soliciting the forthcoming Olympic bid should read this book. If history is a guide it will be your tax dollars making up the cost overruns despite the promises that not a single tax dollar will be used.I feel sorry for the people of Brazil. The book details the heavy price they paid for hosting the 2014 World Cup games. Now they are on the path for another costly venture with the upcoming Olympics. Journalists are reporting problems unfolding just as Zimbalist cited in this book.

This is a very interesting book. It concerns the gamble that's taken by governments with the World Cup and the Olympic Games. It took Montreal thirty years before it paid off its debt from the Olympics. They aren't an investment but should rather be seen more as an expenditure for public approval. After all everybody loves a party until the bill arrives.

Liked the book, living in Boston it helped open my eyes to how bad hosting the Olympics can be, even on a good day. It had some significant sections that seemed to repeat. At some level it seemed like a solid long-form article for The Atlantic that got stretched into a book. But I still tell everyone I know to read it. Boston 2024 will be a giant sink hole for money, not unlike the Big Dig.

Mr. Zimbalist gives you an economist's perspective without getting so wonky you can't see straight. It's incredible what goes into building these mega events and, that's before they turn the first shovel. It's awful and compelling to consider everything that goes into these events. I'm one who thinks the Olympics are cost too much to host. And I tune in every time.

This book gave me great insight into the Olympic games as well as other large sporting events. The amount of planning and spending that occurs is really eye opening. This book sheds a lot of light on the problems with the Olympics and the amount of money countries waste with little to show afterwards. Very interesting.

Professor Zimbalist has once again managed to write a book about a fascinating and extremely complex topic in a way that reads easily and excitingly - even for the casual sports fan (or tax payer) without an advanced degree in economics. I highly recommend this book for any Bostonian (or citizen of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts) who found him/herself excited about the recent announcement that Boston is the USOC's pick as host city candidate for the 2024 Olympics.Professor Zimbalist lays out all the pros and cons of hosting the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup, and even the most ardent sports fan will have to concede that at a minimum the money to host such a mega event would be better spent on infrastructure and programming to benefit the local citizens well into the future.

All over the world, countries and cities think that hosting mega sporting events like the Olympics or World Cup would be an economic panacea. As this excellent book shows, this is not correct. Occasionally, these events produce an economic benefit for the host location; most often they do economic harm. Written for the non-specialist reader, the book reviews the reasons why this is the case as well as presenting fascinating case studies of such economic fiascos as Russia's Winter Olympics in Sochi or Brazil's recent World Cup. It also presents some best practices that cities would be well advised to follow. In particular, the book should be read by citizens of Boston, which is competing for the 2024 Summer Olympics. Wonderful book.

A page turning mystery-action-suspense novel of depth and intensity. A story within a story, beautifully told saturated in history during the upheaval of politics in 1930’s and 1940's Germany and Italy.Richly defined characters project wisdom and wit as well as love, fear, and anger. Female figures portray women of substance.Balson moves deftly between the two interconnected stories of saving an elderly woman’s priceless wine vineyards in Tuscany from an aggressive corporation in present day, to Hitler’s rise to power and the devastating impact on Jews, focusing on one particular family. Balson aptly depicts how little Jews understood of the horrors awaiting them.As Germany played a leading role in arts and science on the world stage, music plays a center role in this engrossing and intelligent novel.Following the quest for justice, the novel proves Balson’s best work since, “Once We Were Brothers”.Excellent writing, excellent story.Political references extend to the historic context of Hitler’s Germany.

I have read every book in the series and this one was meticulously researched but I had some problems with it. The author did not utilize Liam and Catharine enough. They should have been more of an integral part of the novel. There was one main villain and I thought he was overused. We are in the holocaust with nazi's everywhere yet the book is set all around this one evil man. A new character is introduced at the end and it did not work for me. I know she was needed because of the storyline. But to just put her in there bothered me a great deal. It lost its cohesiveness. Lastly, I was unhappy with the ending. All the other four books left me uplifted. This one left me sad. Spoiler: I had hoped for young love to triumph despite the atrocities of the war.

The author is wonderful at building a character! This story takes place in Germany, Tuscany and the USA. Good story which has a little bit of everything in it. It’s tearful as it takes place in Germany at the beginning of the war, so make sure you have some tissues nearby.

I’ve read all of Balson’s books and liked them. This one is weak in premise but an enjoyable read. From why Liam and Catherine are called to Italy to the recurring crossing of characters via “fate” to the sudden happy enough ending. But, a. Easy enjoyable read.

I love Ronald Balson's books. While I write and sell lots of legal thrillers there aren't a lot of writers, generally, I like to read. But Ronald is one guy whose books really reflect the best of fiction writing that can be found today. His ability to weave 1940's classical music with 2018's real estate conveyancing and make it a compelling read is just genius. Thank you for writing, Ronald. Please keep them coming!

I loved this book and this author. He writes the best books. This is another of his World War II stories and it is as good as Once We Were Brothers and Karolina’s Twins. Somehow His third book Saving Sophie slipped by me and you can bet as soon as I finish this, I am getting it on my kindle. I hope he is busy writing another book. 🤗❤️

Good book. Confusing at times. Lots of dates, places, names. But a satisfying finish and a comfort level with Liam and Catherine. Great couple. Surprised they left their small child for what seemed like a very long time (the whole book...) but overall I liked it and would recommend it. CH

As in each of the prior novels, this relatively new novelist creates a perfect fusion of creative imagination, and history. This is my latest book club recommendation.

The Art of the Renaissance, by Lucia Corrain

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-7--An engaging and intelligent treatment of a seemingly overwhelming subject to tackle in so brief a book. It covers 30 topics relevant to the era, such as individual artists (Masaccio and Titian), towns (Milan and Rome), and techniques (oil painting and wood sculpture). Most of them are discussed on double-page spreads, while others are given only one page of coverage. Despite the brevity of each entry, a surprising amount of solid information is conveyed. A typical entry consists of an introductory paragraph; a large illustration; and three-to-eight smaller illustrations, photographs, and full-color reproductions (along with accompanying captions). For example, the entry on wood sculpture features a paragraph about this art form's leading practitioners and showcases an altarpiece created by Veit Stoss. It includes a picture of the piece under construction, several explanatory captions, plus smaller drawings that illustrate the carving process step-by-step, a photograph of the Bamberg altar, and a short biography of Veit Stoss. With its attractive layout, this title does a fine job of introducing young readers to this period in art history, but the information covered only scratches the surface. Therefore, it is best used as an elementary overview rather than as a definitive source for reports.Melissa Hudak, Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry, ILCopyright 1998 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

"The Art of the Renaissance" is part of the "Masters of Art" series which was first published in Italy in the 1990's. Like all the other books in the series, "The Art of the Renaissance" is a large format book. The production values are very high. Along with beautiful reproductions of Renaissance paintings, this volume has accompanying illustrations produced by two master illustrators, Simone Boni and L.R. Galante. Boni and Galante are two of the finest historical illustrators ever to work in children's literature. The text by Lucia Corrain is well written and does a good job of covering the remarkable artistic flowering that took place in Europe. This book is geared towards children of middle school age. For younger children, I would recommend Piero Ventura's masterful "Great Painters." All in all, this is a beautiful book and I would recommend it and all the other books in "The Masters of Art" series.

From back cover:Sawako Kuronuma is the perfect heroine.... for a horror movie. With striking similarities to a haunting movie character - jet-black hair, sinister smile and silent demeanor, she always had trouble fitting in. but her whole life changes when she befriends the most popular boy in class.Sawako finally realizes that her feelings for Kazehaya are more than Just admiration. But this novice in love has a lot to learn about romance. Not that Chizu can help her out any - she's got enough worries of her own to deal with! Can either of these shy girls take the next step toward a real relationship?Review:This book highlights the fact that the stories are about the group of friends that surround Sawako and Kazehaya, not just those two main characters. This is an approach that I really like in most writing.Kurumi admits to Kazehaya that she has feelings for him, but Kazehaya admits that he already cares about a different girl (he doesn't name Sawako, but Kurumi isn't stupid) . Chizu (she is NOT shy, clueless, but NOT shy) is in a tizzy shopping for a birthday present for Ryu (Sanada). Although Chizu and Yani meet Sawako's parents for the first time (a sleep over at Sawako's house), Sawako (and Kazehaya) is more of a supporting character in this book. Sawako is initially confused by who Chizu has feelings for and Chizu is totally oblivious to the person who has feelings for her.I enjoyed seeing more of the other characters - Yano, Chizu, Ryu/Sanada, Mr. Arai (a teacher), Sawako's parents, etc. but this does mean that the main story line didn't seem to progress very much. This series moves slowly, but Sawako always leaves me with a warm feeling.I give book 5 of kimi ni todoke a 4.In order to come up with an overall review/rating for the series and this specific book within the series, I used the following criteria:Character development: Excellent (5). This series is about teenagers and their relationships; primarily focused on the high school environment and activities. The characters are very real and human. I would be surprised if anyone reading this could not find someone that they can relate to. The characters grow and we learn more about them in a consistent manner. In the 20+ books that I have read of this series, I have not noted any actions that seemed out of character based on the character development and story line. Characters have changed, but they have changed in ways that are logical and consistent with what the reader knows of them.Art: Is slightly better than average (3.5) I enjoy this series a great deal, but the art could be improved especially the faces.Relationship development: is Excellent (5) Although this series does move slowly, this means that the relationships develop as they would in real life. The shy girl doesn't get the guy by the end of the first book, friendships don't develop (or end) abruptly and for no reason, etc.Overall Story: Very Good (4). This is not my 'typical' genre of manga, but I did enjoy reading the books. My big complaint is that it seems to move so so slowly. It is about relationships - love, friendship, frenemies, and acquaintences. Sawaka agonizes for chapters over decisions. Since I do the same thing, I can't fault her, but at the same time, it does make the story move very slowly.Author's notes/extras: Not every author includes includes author's notes, however, Karuho Shiina has. I enjoy learning more about the person behind a book so I appreciate the extra effort that the author takes to tell us about herself. Will I re-read? Excellent (5). Yes, I will re-read this series. As a matter of fact, I DID. I read most of the books (the first time) on-line, but felt guilty that the author and publishing company were not benefiting. I then purchased the books and have found that the print version from the publisher is the better way (for me) to enjoy these books. Will I recommend? Very Good (4.5). If you enjoy this style of manga, I believe you will enjoy this series.

From back cover:Sawako Kuronuma is the perfect heroine.... for a horror movie. With striking similarities to a haunting movie character - jet-black hair, sinister smile and silent demeanor - she is mistakenly called Sadako by those around her. But behind her scary facade is a very misunderstood teenager. Too shy to fit in, all she wants to do is make some friends. But when the most popular boy in class befriends her, she's sure to make more than just that - she's about to make some enemies too!Review:Sawako Kuronuma is beginning her first year of high school. Because of her appearance, she has the nickname "Sadako" - the name of a fictional character behind a 'cursed video'. Sawako is shy (and naive and trusting and....), but determined to make friends. She meets another first year student named Shota Kazehaya who is in her class. Kazehaya is naturally friendly and is also very popular. Based on Kazehaya's positive interactions with Sawako, other students begin to talk to her as well. Sawako has been ignored/ostracized for so long that she feels unworthy of what many would consider common politeness. Sawako credits Kazehaya with being responsible for her new friends and the improvement in the way other students view her. Sawako clearly has a case of hero worship for Kazehaya, but finds that her feelings for him are different than her feelings for other (male) classmates who are polite to her.Kazehaya shows signs of special feelings for Sawako as well. He is happy for that she has female friends (her first) who invite her to do things with them, but.... he wonders how long he will have to wait for her attention. I found Kazehaya especially well written since he had to deal with his own interest in Sawako, but doesn't want to interfere with her budding friendships. The book ends with Sawako being accused of spreading rumors about her new friends. Due to her shyness and lack of communication skills, the misunderstandings are likely to increase. This series does move slowly, but I found this a very satisfying introduction to Sawako and her classmates.I give book 1 of kimi ni todoke a 4.5In order to come up with an overall review/rating for the series and this specific book within the series, I used the following criteria:Character development: Excellent (5).
